How it works

Three steps. That's the whole game.

No tutorial, no menus to learn. Step outside and the world does the rest.

  1. 01

    Walk

Head out your front door — that is the whole instruction. Rainbow Wander uses your phone’s motion and location to quietly follow where you go. You do not have to stare at the screen; tuck it in your pocket and just be outside. Gatsby comes along, getting happier with every step.

  2. 02

    Bloom

As you move through the world, the blocks you pass bloom from grey into vivid color — one of twelve gentle hues, grouped into neighborhoods. Each bloom is a small celebration: a pop of glow, drifting petals, a festival lantern. Watch your city become a map of color you made with your feet.

  3. 03

    Remember

See something lovely? Take a photo and it pins to the exact spot. Over time your map turns into a story — the corner where the jacarandas bloomed, the route you always take, the day you walked farther than you meant to. A keepsake, not a scoreboard.

Why it feels different

A game that is happy to be ignored

Most apps want your attention. Rainbow Wander wants you to forget about it and go enjoy your walk. There is nothing to optimize, no perfect route, no daily quota. It rewards exactly one thing — being outside — and it is genuinely glad whenever you are, however much.

Good questions

Does it track me in the background?

Only while you are on a walk, and only to color your world and pin your photos. Your location never leaves your device except to the iCloud account you already trust — and only if you turn on a shared world with someone.

Do I have to look at my phone the whole time?

Not at all. Put it in your pocket and walk. The world fills in whether you are watching or not — checking the map is a treat for when you get home, not a chore for the road.

Is there any way to lose, or break a streak?

No. There are no timers, no streaks to protect, and no failure state of any kind. Walk a lot or a little; the world only ever gets prettier.

What does it cost? Any ads?

Rainbow Wander is free, and it will never show you an ad or sell your data. It was made as a gift, and it behaves like one.

What do I need to play?

An iPhone running iOS 17 or later. It is coming to the App Store — join the waitlist and we will wave you in.

Can my partner and I walk together?

Yes. Link your worlds and you will paint the same city side by side — or from two different cities, with the map filling in from both of you.
